On the First Friday of every month - throughout the year - businesses, artists, and entertainers throw a party in downtown Goshen. Hours are generally from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. This month:

2011 Fire and Ice Fest
Goshen’s 4th annual ice carving and chili competition kicks off the new year, Friday and Saturday, January 7 and 8. Join us for this always popular First Fridays event and welcome the New Year to Goshen!

Ice Sculpture carving

Members of the Michiana Ice Carvers Association (MICA) will carve 300-pound blocks of ice in front of downtown stores on Friday from 5 - 9 p.m. Watch these sculptures take form while you shop downtown businesses offering holiday specials.

The celebration continues

Venture back downtown on Saturday and sample local fire with the Chili Fire Competition and watch artists compete in Goshen’s annual Ice Carving Competition.

Chili Fire Competition

To keep everyone warm and fed, the Chili Fire Competition will be going on Saturday from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. Free tastings are available (tickets required – only 500 will be available; pick them up at the Fire & Ice Festival Headquarters located in the lobby of the Goshen Theater (216 South Main Street). You may choose to donate $1 to benefit The Window.

Tasters can vote for their favorite soup at the Headquarters (must vote by 1:30 p.m.). New this year, there will also be a "Food Critics' Choice"award, along with the "People's Choice" award. Food critics are Marshall King (Elkhart Truth), Angela Gingerich (Elkhart County Living) and Mary Ann Lienhart-Cross (Purdue Extension). The winners will be announced on West Washington Street on Saturday at 2 p.m.

Ice Carving Competition on Washington and Main Streets

Contestants test their skills with elaborate competition pieces. With more time to sculpt, and larger blocks of ice, the artists have time to make truly amazing sculptures. Judges will review award cash prizes to the top three contestants. Judges are John Mishler (local artist), Jim Kroemer (Goshen News) and Leah Hunsberger (Friend of Downtown Goshen). The winners will be announced on West Washington Street on Saturday at 2 p.m.

The improv theatre group, GoProv, will be performing on MCA's second major event. MCA is thrilled to work with this group of talented theatre artists! A set of comedy will begin the evening's festivities at 7PM. $5 cover for those wishing to take in this performance.

MCA Artists will also be on hand in their studios to talk one on one about their work. There is no fee for this, just come on up!

A Step Back in Time

Step back in time and step out of the cold for an historic tour of the Goshen Theatre. 

Guided tours will be every 15 minutes from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.  Learn about the history of this gorgeous building and if you're lucky you might stumble back in time and in on a rehearsal from the 1920's.

On Friday night, Delta Theta Tau will be selling soup and two flavors of coffee. We will also have dry soup mixes available for purchase. We'll be located in a trailer on E. Washington Street. Proceeds will go to our medical scholarships that we give out in the spring for area high school seniors going into the medical field.

The gallery also features The Art of Karen Jacob. Jacob, a Michiana artist, uses the gallery as her studio, painting pastels and oil paintings and creating jewelry in her workspace.
